Lumbar Osteoarthritis – also known as DJD or degenerative joint disease is the most common form of joint disease. It is a leading cause of back pain in the elderly and more than 80% of patients over the age of 60 will suffer from it. It is normally more common in females than in males. The most common location for this pain in the spine is at L4-5.
The history includes a slowly developing dull achy joint pain or pain following using the joint and morning stiffness that will ease with either rest or prolonged movement.
This pain will respond well to joint manipulation and the goal of the treatment is to increase joint mobility and relieve pain. Patients who suffer from OA also respond well to heat and anti-inflammatories but it is important to note that these should only be taken if you do not suffer from a condition that contra-indicates their use.
At the Advanced Pain Relief Clinic Milton Keynes we specialise in most types of joint pain as well as back pain relief and use both chiropractic manipulation and acupuncture. It is important to note that the treatment will not get rid of all the symptoms present but will rather help the symptoms when they are severe.
Gentle core stability and Yoga exercises and weight loss as well as certain supplements such as Glucosamine sulphate can help in certain cases.
