Headaches frequently encountered in practice are:
Cervicogenic Headache (generated from neck facet joints and suboccipital muscles)
Classical/Non-Classical Migraine
Tension Headache
Some of the known triggers:
Certain types of foods such as cheese, alcohol, caffeine-based products, artificial sweeteners.
Weather: changes in pressure or hot weather may trigger a headache.
Stress: work-related stress or domestic stress.
Exercise: Jogging and Sex may trigger headaches.
Meats: certain deli meats may cause headaches due to nitrates and tyramines.
Eyestrain: One of the most common types of headaches.
Dehydration/Hypoglycaemia: Another very common type of headache due to not drinking enough water and not keeping blood sugar constant.
If you have any of these signs and symptoms see your NHS GP straight away:
A sudden severe headache accompanied by a stiff neck
A severe headache accompanied by correlated by fever nausea and vomiting
“Worse ever” headache feeling of being hit over head by a baseball bat accompanied by confusion, weakness, double vision or loss of consciousness.
Recurring headaches in children
Following head injury or trauma
A headache and loss of sensation and weakness in any body part which could be the sign of a stroke
Associated with convulsions
Shortness of breath and headache
Two or more headaches per week
Persistent headache in over 50 year old or in somebody who has not had headaches previously
New headaches in someone with history of cancer or HIV
